Artist Statement

Numbers and their inherent value and applications lend themselves to the creation of endless images and stories. These are some of the stories of our daily lives and our interactions with one another and with the world at large.

The fluid, organic lines that make up the shape and contour of numbers, evoke in my mind so much creative energy, such as the graceful flight of a seagull and simultaneously, the effortless, weightless presence of an aquatic creature, for example, that swims freely as if doing perfectly synchronized, acrobatic exercises under water. At times, the curved and/or straight lines of these numbers form a tunnel-like void that bring the viewer into a realm of infinite possibilities and propel them into unknown. One thing is certain: numbers have become the tools and the vessel through which we all can journey into our very own imaginary fairytales.

Mauricio Arcesio was born in Colombia, South America and for the past four years has lived in Oregon. His studio is located in the Alberta Arts District in NE Portland. Mauricio thoroughly enjoys the Pacific-Northwest life style and finds much inspiration and creative energy in everything he experiences every single day. This past December, Mauricio was invited to participate at the 2007 International Biennial of Contemporary Art in Florence, Italy, where he had the opportunity to successfully showcase his paintings and be part of a unique artistic experience with fellow artists from around the world. Mauricio is committed to supporting our local art scene, Portland’s emerging and very eclectic art community and looks forward to everything artistic and creative that life in Oregon has to offer.
